Kenny Slaught says that children may feel like their lives are forever changed after experiencing the death of a family member. In order to process their feelings, the I Have a Friend program was started. The program connects the grieving child with a mentor who went through the same loss at a similar age. The volunteer and child become close, which helps the kid heal by being provided sympathy and understanding. Often, the friendship that forms lasts through the years as the child continues to heal.
